Martin Creed's Madness

I found out about Martin Creed's work a couple of months ago and since then I have wanted to share it. The Scottish artists has been doing his thing since the late 80s and his work can only really be described at bonkers or I'm sure a lot of people would say pointless. Well after all, art is pointless but it's all the pointless things in life that make life so good, right?

His work carries on nicely from my last post, nicely organised things and if you are into things that are a bit surreal then you will love his website and the rest of his work. Click the link and you will see, "The official and the unofficial Martin Creed website", cupboards blocking doors, weird protrusions, pointless marker pens and all sorts of daft but thought provoking installations.

Let me know what you think, like or dislike. All images are from his site

Oh, I love the surreality of this. Especially the nails and shadows and the white 'thing' growing out of wall is wonderful. It might be pointless, but it's wonderful.

Mental and bonkers is good! I like art that seems completely pointless and doesn't have an immediate message, becuase I think that in trying to find a message and in the answer you get, you find out something about how your mind works... does that make sense?

I am really liking those puffy black bags. Looks like something a Gareth Pugh model would pop out of.

I would also add that life itself would be pointless without the little pointless (but fun) things in it. I'm happy with just anything that's aesthetically pleasing :):):) But regarding Creed, I think he very well illustrates the fact that art is what we make of it. I do think that the pins-on-the-wall idea worked out nicely!

i certainly don't dislike it. for the most part I don't tend to be drawn towards modern art of this type. i definitely think it is the sort of thing you need to experience in person - as is probably true with all art to be fair. but i'd definitely be up for seeing his work in the flesh. xx

I'm personally still trying to figure out whether Martin Creed is a genius, when it comes to conceptual art or he's a genius for realizing that the art world eats up anything that has a hint of uniqueness and has used this to make himself well established.

Then again what he's doing isn't that unique.
But i admire how he's pushing the boundaries of contemporary art; making people question a piece of work, asking whether it is art or not is always a good thing.

And art is not pointless, it's a necessity.

I love this, I like humour in art sometimes it can all get a tad boring and dull. This is so fresh and different, I like a bit of mentalist. I mean some people have to be bonkers, but if you are bonkers and an artist it works. I love the wall bump, it actually reminds me of when I was pregnant :P I agree, pointless is usually the most important thing in life. The pointless things make up the fabric of life, it's the so called needed and wanted things that get I the way. There use to be a road sign at the end of the street near where I live that I loved, it had rusted and had a curled corner it was beautiful in it's own way. It went missing and because it said 'one way' there was a huge traffic jam. They replaced it, but I don't like the new one ....I'm sure in time it will curl and rust. I'm not sure if that makes any sense or I am now talking shit :P

I imagine this is the sort of work where any ignoramous could walk into a gallery and scoff "well I could have done that, it's not art." The whole point to this is the vision in the first place, he was the only one who DID do it, and therefore see the possibility of creating something thought-provoking from inanimate objects. Big fan. jazzy ♥
